Eating in Madrid

I post an email I sent to one friend who was asking for advice about where to eat and drink in Madrid. The places are quite tipical, I think young foreign people that are coming to Madrid will like it.

Let´s go for some cañas and tapas!!!
- I messaging you because this Friday I'm going to Madrid and I need some tips from you. Remember the places we have been, the ones you can drink and eat for less money, good value. I remember that you took us to great tapas and cañas places. Great places to have cañas and it was cheap. People thinks that Madrid its expensive, but I told them that when I was was there with you was great and you show us the best places in Madrid for tapas and cañas.

- Hahahaha!!! Nice to see that you have good memories about Madrid and all this tapas restaurants and cañas bars. We have really good fun there. No problem, I will let you know about all about them.

CAÑAS: Refreshing and delicious :)
CHEAP TAPAS

One of the most famous tapas bar in Madrid among the students is El Tigre (calle de las infantas 30). With every beer they give away a good amount of food (croquetas, bravas, etc.). It is not exactly the best quality, but its free. Anyway, it's good to go there at least once to see the ambient. Usually its quite crowed so better go a bit early in the evening.

You can get something quite similar at La Blanca Paloma. It's a bigger place but quite popular nowadays, so better go early around 20h. With the first beer the give you a fried egg and some others tapas. Same than before free but not great quality.

Free Fried egg at Blanca Paloma
Malasaña it's one of my favourites areas of Madrid to go out. You can find nice pubs and bars. In this neighborhood you can find a mitic bar in Madrid "El Palentino", is the bar where Manu Chao used to go when he was around Madrid and where the videoclip "Me llaman calle" was recorded.

Las cañas (little glasses of beer) and the bacon or chorizo bocadillos (sandwich) are around 1,5 euros what is the cheapest price in town. It's a bar where you can find a funny mix: hipsters and old people.

Best cañas in Spain... Madrid
El Museo del Jamón at Carrera de San Jerónimo (near Sol tube station) used to have great offers like 1 euro caña and 1 euro serrano ham toasted or ham and cheese croissant. Its a good place where to start cause is very central and quite visual as has plenty of jam hanging on the roof.

Cervecería La Sureña, also good prices, maybe not so cheap about the food but nice terrace and great beer deals.

FOOD TABLES

Placed in the historical center of Madrid you will find El Lacón It has a good value in the the food tables (cold meat, hot meat or sea food) and if you only want to have a caña you will get a tapa for free and you will be able to choose it... I would totally recommend "callos", it's a quite tipical dish from Madrid and at El Lacón they make a really tasty ones with peas.

COCIDO MADRILEÑO

Probably the most typical dish of Madrid is "el cocido madrileño". Great for recovering energy in a rainy or cold day. Traditionally is served in three steps, soup, vegetables and meat. In the restaurants with "Menu del día" (daily menu, usually quite chea, around 10euros) is served in two dishes, first the soup and second veggies and meat (the picture down would be the second plate). You could find plenty of places where to eat Cocido Madrileño in Madrid, I will recommend a couple:

Malacatin (calle Ruda, 5 - La latina area) seems to have one of the best cocidos in Madrid. Other good restaurant is La Daniela (a chain with several restaurans in Madrid, the one close to Plaza Mayor, at Cava de San Miguel is a nice one). The price could be around 25 euros, but the portions are totally worth it.

OTHER OPTIONS...

Regarding some other places, but not so cheap, you can find great quality food in "Bar Mui" a place where you find traditional concept in a modern atmosphere. Around 15-20 euros.

A posh-cool restaurant that offers modern tapas is La gabinoteca. For those who want something more than the traditional dishes. Around 25-30 euros.

These are some of the most popular places but for a first visit to Madrid think it's quite enough. Also remember to check my blog, for many others restaurants you can check the MADRID TAGS and like it in facebook to follow me ;)

GIN TONICS

Since 4 years ago, when the gintonic fever started in Madrid everybody is freaking out and drinking gin tonics all around. There is a lot  of wankers in this trendy shit but a gintonic time to time is a great pleasure. If you fell like enjoying one of them you could go around calle del pez (malasaña area - station Tribunal). Plenty of bars around.

One of this Gins places is Casa del pez which is not far away from El Palentino I think we also went together and the G&T are nice and good value (around 8 euros).

Let me know about any other doubt you have.

Un abrazoooooooo
